The latest Oscar nominations confirm that Apple TV+ is currently performing well with its television series, but still faces challenges for the streaming service when it comes to movies.

None of the Apple TV+ films from the year 2024 were honored by the Academy.

Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its nominations for the 97th Academy Awards.

Apple has nothing to offer in terms of Best Director, Actor or Actress, Documentary, Cinematography.

Apple TV+ films were nowhere to be found.

A few films that could have been candidates if they had all received Chinese cinema screen qualification would include:

  • The Blitz directed by filmmaker Steve McQueen
  • The Last Sea Swimmer, a critically acclaimed documentary
  • Beautiful Tanzanita, Apple's best-rated film shoot of the year
  • Lead Me to the Moon
  • and Wolf

This Oscar snub shows the streaming service's persistent difficulties with films, while it performs well with television series.

The early Oscar success was lost due to shifted film strategies.

In 2022, Apple TV+ won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, the first time ever. CODA impressed the competition with their skills and deserves the highest film prize of Apple.

Netflix had never won an Oscar for Best Cinematic Artistry before, so CODA's victory was particularly special.

But since then, Apple's film success and strategy have declined.

After a series of theatrically underperforming actors and a final streaming shift for Wolf, Apple officially announced that it has changed its film strategy and will only publish streaming-based content henceforth.

It seems that Apple prioritizes more mass-market films rather than the Oscar-motivated projects of the past. This includes also the large-budget F1 film, which is supposed to be Apple's first summer blockbuster.

Might it be worth considering that the lack of Oscar nominations for the company is not a great loss. But it must still be disappointing when one considers how early Apple had success with the Oscars.
