TikTok's US ban faces significant hurdles as the Supreme Court is unlikely to overturn it. If upheld, a January 19 ban will likely go into effect. The court focused on national security concerns and ByteDance's lack of First Amendment rights. Critics emphasize privacy risks, while supporters argue for freedom of speech. The former President Trump has expressed a desire to lift sanctions, potentially influencing the outcome.

The US-appeal of TikToks history is almost at an end, and their last major hope – a victory through the Supreme Court – now seems rather unlikely. Therefore, a January 19 ban in the USA will likely be more realistic. Here are the latest updates.

The Supreme Court appears unlikely to uphold the TikTok ban.

Today, the American High Court heard over two hours of arguments on TikToks impending ban.

The general opinion of observers is that the sanction will probably be upheld.

Although the Supreme Court has not yet made a decision, this case provided numerous pieces of evidence suggesting that the ban will not be interrupted by the country's high court.

Sam Baker writes at Axios:

Many judges focused on one central point on Friday: The legislation would allow TikTok to operate if it uses an algorithm that is not ByteDance. And ByteDance, as a Chinese company, has no First Amendment rights.

Anne Marimow writes at The Washington Post:

The majority of judges seemed to focus on the National Security Exceptions of Congress, which are worried that the Chinese government could collect sensitive data from millions of American users and use this information to threaten young Americans or turn them into spies.

If the TikTok ban continues, as TikToks lawyer Noel Francisco said during the pre-hearing session, the app will 'go dark' in the USA on January 19.

Top-comment by TeeJay2022, liked by 6 people I don't see this as a problem of freedom of speech. While many like the funny videos, it is worthless due to privacy risks. Selling to US owners won't work because Byte Dance will never sell their carefully optimized algorithms. Many 'influencers' probably need to find real jobs, but personally I'm not angry at them. What happens next depends on each person's decision.

The former President Trump has stated that he wants to lift the sanctions. Therefore, it is possible that we will see progress in this area after his inauguration on January 20.

But if nothing changes, TikTok's time in the USA could soon be over.

I am unsure about the TikTok ban. Let's share your feedback in the comments section.
