The Indonesian government stated that it expects its exclusion of the iPhone 16 to be lifted "in one or two weeks," but has not explained the basis for this.

The Minister for Investments gave only an unusual and somewhat contradictory comment, which seemed to suggest that negotiations were imminent...

History So Far

Governments of populous countries are increasingly learning to seek a counter-performance agreement where Apple's access to their markets is conditional, and in return demands an economic intervention from abroad.

Indonesia began with relatively low requirements from Apple, which should have invested 109 million dollars in a developer academy there, as well as an additional 10 million for production needs. When these targets were not met, the government significantly increased the challenge. It banned the iPhone 16 from sale and demanded a much larger investment.

Apple initially offered 100 million dollars, but the government said that was insufficient. It then demanded billions of dollars in manufacturing costs for the nation. Ultimately, it became known that Apple had conceded to this objection and would present this as a large production of AirTags.

However, the Indonesian government rejected this offer with anger and found that only the production of iPhone components would count.

The Exclusion of iPhones 16 could end in one or two weeks.

Bloomberg Today offers an interview with India's Finance Minister Rosan Roeslani, who mentions that her team hopes the problem will be resolved quickly.

I believe very strongly that it will be solved very, very soon," said Roeslani in a conversation with Bloomberg Television in Davos on Tuesday. "I hope this problem can be resolved within one or two weeks."

However, no explanation was given for this optimism. Instead, Roeslani made only a vague statement:

The way they calculate it is different, I believe," said Roeslani regarding local content requirements. "Now they have found a solution to this problem, so hopefully they will accept the deviations so we can sell the iPhone 16 in India."

It seems that Apple has made a new proposal, with "hopefully accepting the deviations" meaning.

It is clear that the matter will be resolved as both sides need it, but we currently do not know how this will happen.
