The long-term goal of Vision Pro for Apple is considered an Apple-glass product, where a regular pair of glasses can display both text and AR content.

We have seen some competitors already making efforts in this direction, and the RayNeo X3 Pro AR-glasses look like the closest product to a real-world product we've seen so far.

The long journey to Apple-glass glasses

A glass-form factor is also considered by Apple as its long-term goal with Vision Pro, only being an early step towards it. In 2019, it was reported that Apple believes that an AR-glasses will one day replace the iPhone.

Meta showed a preliminary version of their Orion AR-glasses at the end of last summer, which offered a convincing glimpse into a product that looks and feels like Meta's existing smartglasses. However, the design was enormous and cumbersome, and it was reported that it was made only to cost $10,000 per piece.

In this way, a new model of the existing RayBan Meta smartglasses from the company is allegedly going to receive a display in 2024.

Karissa Bell from Engadget had the opportunity to try out the latest glasses from RayNeo at CES.

RayNeo uses microLED projectors and waveguides to create a colorful AR display. The size of the visible area is only 25 degrees […] but it is impressively bright. Even under relatively bright light conditions in a Las Vegas casino ballroom, I had no trouble seeing the menus or even making text readable (the display produces 2,500 nits, according to the company).

What stood out most was the size. With less than 3 ounces, the RayNeo X3 Pro is impressively lightweight. Like other AR-glasses I've tested, they don't look quite like a "normal" pair of glasses, but they also don't feel too far removed.

The glasses naturally have an AI assistant supported by ChatGTP and offer the option to convert speech to text in real-time. Bell said that it works well even in the noisy environment of CES.

However, there are two notable drawbacks. The battery life is only 30 minutes after intensive use. The price is estimated at around $1500. There is no specific information about availability, but the introduction is promised for "later this year".

The exact form factor is difficult to discern in RayNeo's advertising, but you can get a better sense of the real look in the photo on Engadget.
