Sounds have been circulating for many years about foldable iPhones, but the latest reports suggest that Apple is finally ready to launch its new product. According to the rumor, Apple is working on two foldable products: a clamshell-style foldable iPhone and a giant 20-inch iPad tablet, but the foldable iPhone is expected to be launched first.

Screen Details

The first foldable smartphone from Apple is supposed to be a flip phone-like device, similar to the Galaxy Z Flip or Motorola Razr – with a screen size comparable to that of a typical phone, but with the ability to fold inwards and fit smaller in your pocket.

Recent reports from The Wall Street Journal suggest that the foldable iPhone will have a larger screen than the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which means it will offer at least a 7-inch screen:

The company also plans to release two foldable devices, people said. A large device, intended as a portable laptop, would have a screen that extends to be practically as wide as some office monitors, around 19 inches. A smaller model would extend to a display size larger than an iPhone 16 Pro Max, intended as the foldable iPhone, people said.

Some internal challenges in designing a foldable smartphone include reducing the visibility of creases, improving the hinge, and creating a good material for the screen cover. Apple aims to resolve all these issues before launch.

The first foldable iPhone would be expected to strengthen a declining foldable market, according to Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC).

From 2019 to 2023, the foldable smartphone market experienced impressive annual growth of 40%. However, the group estimates that this growth will slow considerably to around 5% in 2024, and sales will start to decline from 2025:

The latest DSCC report on the foldable and foldable/sliding display market for all applications shows that the foldable smartphone market has entered a plateau. After experiencing an annual growth rate of at least 40% from 2019 to 2023, DSCC is now convinced that the foldable smartphone screen market will increase only by 5% in 2024 and decrease by 4% in 2025. Demand has stagnated around 22 million screens.

Release Date

According to multiple sources, the first foldable iPhone from Apple is likely to start in the second half of 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 series. This assumes there are no other development delays. In mid-2024, Apple assigned a new codenamed V68 to the project – which suggests that this product has surpassed the prototyping stage and we should see it soon in our hands.
