Apple's intelligence notifications feature in iOS 18.1 is a new AI-driven summary tool that automatically summarizes information from incoming notifications rather than displaying the full text. The feature has been criticized for its accuracy, with recent examples highlighting persistent errors: 1. A false summary stating Luigi Mangione had shot himself. 2. An incorrect claim by Apple intelligence that Luke Littler won the women's world championship in darts before he had played in the final rounds. 3. Another error informing users that Rafael Nadal had come out sexually. The BBC and other users have reported these issues, suggesting that while the feature is still in beta, it has significant room for improvement. There are concerns about whether this type of AI-driven summarization should be used by default in news apps due to potential inaccuracies. The article concludes with a list of recommended accessories for iPhone 100W brick charger, 1.8-meter USB-C cable for longer range AirPods Pro 2, iPhone MagSafe stand, and a HomeKit 4-unit smart home kit.

The summaries of Apple's intelligence notifications, in my opinion, are one of the first AI killer features. But they are not without imperfections, as the BBC has continued to highlight through several new examples today. Here are the latest errors from Apple’s Intelligence with news alerts.

BBC News highlights persistent errors from Apple’s Intelligence

Recently, the BBC officially expressed its concerns regarding Apple concerning its new intelligence notification summary feature.

Added in iOS 18.1, this feature allows Apple's Intelligence to summarize information from a notification rather than providing the actual written content.

Apple’s Intelligence is currently available in beta, so they say you should expect errors and report them so that the system can continue to be improved.

The BBC takes this information seriously. The December example involved the AI falsely stating through a summary alert from BBC News that Luigi Mangione had shot himself. This was entirely false.

Today, Imran Rahman-Jones of the BBC has published several additional examples of Apple intelligence errors reported by his users (via AppleInsider).

An Apple news summary falsely claimed that professional darts player Luke Littler had won the women’s world championship (PDC) – before he even played in the final rounds.

The incorrect summary was written by artificial intelligence (AI) and is based on a BBC story according to which Littler won the semi-final of the tournament this evening.

In the following hours, another AI notification falsely informed some users of the BBC Sport app that famous tennis player Rafael Nadal had come out sexually.

There are surely many more examples than users have seen, so I wouldn't be surprised if stories like this become more common.

News summaries are prone to errors for all types of apps, but they can particularly present problems when used to summarize major news.

Simplifying a summary that is already a summary seems a bit superfluous at first glance, so I wonder if Apple's ultimate solution will be to disable AI summaries by default for news apps.

Do you think these Apple intelligence errors are a serious problem? How did you find the summaries in your experience? Share your thoughts in the comments.
