Cinq ans ago, Apple was involved in a legal procedure regarding the 'illegal and intentional' recording of interactions with Siri. Now, finally, the case is finally concluded, with Apple agreeing to pay 95 million dollars in a settlement agreement.

The payment to users by Apple could go up to 20 dollars per device affected by Siri.

The long-standing legal dispute between Apple and the recordings of Siri ends with an agreement, according to a Reuters report. Federal Judge Jeffrey White of the Oakland federal court must still approve the agreement, but it was submitted to Apple on Tuesday evening with his agreement.

Parties involved in the 2019 legal proceedings have stated that Apple recorded conversations without their consent, and these conversations were shared with third-party services that led to targeted advertising. All of this was related to the 'Hey Siri' voice activation feature.

Users can now benefit from the settlement payment.

Jonathan Stempel writes for Reuters:

The class members, estimated in the tens of millions, may receive up to 20 dollars per device equipped with Siri, such as iPhones and Apple Watches.

Apple has refused to recognize a fault in accepting a settlement.

The first incident surrounding the legal proceedings and reports of Siri in 2019 led to several changes by Apple, including:

  • An internal review of practices related to Siri, including the use of contracts
  • New requests for authorization to record Siri's audio on Apple devices
  • And a privacy system that you are certainly familiar with: 'Do Not Track'

The changes that Apple has implemented over the years did not constitute an acknowledgment of guilt, and compliance today does not do so either.

Indeed, the company seems to have found today the best negotiation scenario for them. I have not verified the calculations on this matter, but Reuters notes that the 95 million dollar deposit is equivalent to "about nine hours of profit for Apple."

For now, no information is available on how to claim your share of the payment. However, we will keep you informed when the settlement is finalized and these logistics are established.
