This year, Apple will launch the AirTag 2 - its first hardware upgrade of the product. I think it has the potential to become a hidden success.

What You Can Expect from AirTag 2

If you're not up-to-date, here's a reminder of what you can expect from AirTag 2:

The AirTag 2 is expected to be launched this year, according to sources including Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg.

The Key Upgrade

One of the things I'm most optimistic about is that AirTag 2 offers significant improvements for precise location tracking. This feature is designed to show you exactly where a lost AirTag is by combining Bluetooth and the Ultrawide Wideband chip. In practice, the precise location tracking function is quite fussy and only works under ideal conditions.

According to Bloomberg reports, it seems that my wish will come true. Currently, the precise search feature works at about 10 to 30 meters. AirTag 2 will benefit from a new Ultra Wideband generator with triple the range for precise searches. This means that the features should work between 30 and 90 meters. In fact, we have already seen the updated Ultra Wideband generator in real life thanks to the iPhone 15.

This will be a significant improvement in usability. Currently, the simplest way to locate something is by emitting sound from the Air Tag's speaker. This will take you generally towards the Air Tag, but a more powerful precise search will lead you to its exact location.

Conclusion

AirTag doesn't often attract headlines and attention like the next flagship iPhone update. But that's because it has a purpose, and it achieves it exceptionally well. Almost everyone I talk to has a story to share about how AirTags have saved their day when they lost a paper bag or backpack. I also receive many people who lose something without an AirTag and immediately buy one to never be confronted with it again.
