Summary: The Apple Snoopy screen saver is a success. The selection of Apple screens is limited. Third-party creators should have access to animated screens. No winning ad found for the zone: below the first paragraph!

I like pleasant surprises, and seeing one of my old favorites—Snoopy—appear as an option on my Apple TV 4K definitely counts as extreme satisfaction. However, this made me think about the potential loss in how Apple manages native sleep screens on Apple TV devices.

The "Apple Snoopy Sleep Screen is Incredible

If you haven't checked yet, the Peanuts screen saver arrived with tvOS 18.2 at the beginning of December 2024. This screen saver, featuring the famous animated dog Snoopy, is a beautiful high-resolution version of Snoopy performing various activities, like sleeping on his doghouse or exploring space—as you would if you were a dog with a big imagination.

We almost had it right from its public release (it was available to beta testers before) and this reminds me really of classic screen savers like Johnny Castaway.

Also, being now at OLED technology, I feel as if sleep screens have returned to their old function. Overprinting is much less of a problem with modern OLEDs, but it's not an issue with a good sleep screen. I don't stop watching TV during the day and prefer using it as a multimedia player or use art apps to display pleasant images that jazz up the place.

Apple Offers Magnificent Screen Savers, But Limited Selection

This Snoopy screen saver is the latest addition to Apple's native selection of screen savers, which also includes Aerials, Memories, Slideshows, and Portraits. They are elegant and very beautiful to look at, but there aren't many choices when it comes to variety.

Of course, new videos are added to Aerials semi-regularly, but I'm talking about new background screen concepts. I would like more charming backgrounds like Snoopy to choose from.

For example, on one of my smart Samsung TVs, I use an art unlocker funded by a museum institution. Transforming the TV into a high-resolution portrait. It would be great if Apple did something like that!

Third-Party Creators Don't Have Access to Native Screen Savers

If Apple seems hesitant to add more screen savers, I think it would have been great if they let third-party creators create their own. A "native screen saver" is one that runs at the operating system level and is triggered by tvOS itself. There are 'screen savers' apps in the Apple TV app store, but these are simply normal applications you must open manually.

Giving third-party creators access to screen savers on tvOS would quickly create a large selection of screen savers, and some of them would even be functional, rather than just decorative. However, if we look at how Apple manages frames for its famous range of smartwatches, I'm not very optimistic they will do this.

Maybe due to security concerns, or low-quality inappropriate content in recording screens. I've tried searching for any official statement regarding third-party native recording screens from the company, but I haven't found anything until now.

The Apple TV needs a screen saver store

If the desire to share a bit of beauty isn't enough to motivate Apple to add original backgrounds or allow third parties to use them, what about cold hard cash?

Apple is already satisfied selling ringtones on the iPhone, so why not let movie studios and other content producers enter to sell high-quality 4K home screen recordings for a few dollars?

I don't know if you need it, but I would really like to have a dozen or two of detractors screens to cover every mood and season. TV will be somewhere or another. It could also contribute to the interior decoration of my house, as it is.
