CarPlay 2 deserves a restart for the mass, here's what it looks like

Apple's next-generation CarPlay, CarPlay 2, has been delayed despite a 2024 deadline. The company is considering a radical change in approach and relaunching CarPlay 2 to focus on serving current Apple users with improvements to the existing CarPlay 1.0 system rather than aiming for an idealized complete vehicle experience. This shift could increase customer satisfaction, brand loyalty, and potentially give Apple more influence in negotiations with automotive manufacturers regarding CarPlay 2.

The next generation of Apple CarPlay, often called CarPlay 2, is still not available despite a deadline of 2024. Here's why it's time for Apple to adopt a radically different new mode of operation and relaunch CarPlay 2.

The dream of CarPlay 2 that has not yet been realized

CarPlay 2 was announced almost three years ago at the WWDC 2022. The idea was essentially 'CarPlay, but to an extreme.'

Apple explains:

CarPlay has radically changed how people interact with their vehicles, and the next generation of CarPlay will go even further by deeply integrating with the vehicle's hardware. CarPlay will be capable of providing content on multiple screens inside the vehicle, creating a unified and consistent experience.

The concept of an entirely car equipped with interfaces designed by Apple was pleasant to hear, but it was obviously a major challenge for automotive manufacturers.

A few years ago, the adoption of CarPlay in vehicles was obvious to most manufacturers (I see you there, Tesla).

Since the introduction of CarPlay 2, more and more automotive enthusiasts have lost interest in the Apple system.

It was an era where selling transferring the entire dashboard of a vehicle to Apple was difficult for automotive manufacturers. Today, continuing to fully support CarPlay 1 is no longer a given.

Perhaps it's not surprising that Apple missed its 2024 deadline for the first arrival of vehicles equipped with CarPlay 2.

The tides of assistance to CarPlay have shifted, and Apple must react by changing direction itself.

CarPlay 2 deserves a restart focused on serving the people.

Moving CarPlay 2 to serve millions of current Apple users

Millions of users currently love Apple's first generation of CarPlay.

But thanks to the efforts of the company for CarPlay 2, very little has changed regarding CarPlay in recent years. A couple of minor improvements to the AI in iOS 18.1 are not enough.

Apple can quickly change direction and make this happen.

Instead of trying to achieve an idealized and complete vehicle experience with CarPlay 2, Apple's efforts should be redirected towards CarPlay 1.0, a system that is available for all. See all comments

If it wants to continue working with selected manufacturers on custom and complete systems, that's great. I'm sure they will be exciting when they are finally shipped.

However, Apple can begin to introduce key components of its CarPlay 2 system into the current version of CarPlay.

This change would certainly lead to an increase in customer satisfaction with CarPlay. It could also increase brand loyalty. All of this could potentially give Apple more influence in negotiations with automotive manufacturers regarding the overall vision of CarPlay 2.
