What are Connections?

Connections is a game by The New York Times. The objective is simple: sort 16 words into groups of 4. Each group of words will be linked by an idea or common theme. This common element can be anything. We've seen it all, from games that depend on the number of letters in the words to categories that require you to notice an extra letter at the end of the word. Sometimes it's a reference to the economy, other times it refers to fairy tales. We never know what kind of association will be between the words.

Once you are sure of the connection, select 4 words, then press "Submit". You have a total of four attempts, so be careful.

How to Guess the Connection Groups?

There is no quick and reliable method for approaching Connections as there is with Wordle, because Connections are not algorithmic. However, there are a few things you can try:

  1. Synonyms? Sometimes, the categories will simply be synonyms of a phrase or very close to synonyms. Don't be too confident in this. Sometimes, Connections deliberately introduce words that are sometimes synonyms to mislead you.
  2. Try saying the words. Sometimes, saying the words helps. A puzzle we saw included the words go, rate, faster, clipper, rhythm, speed, move, circulate and accelerate - all obviously related to the idea of movement. However, when you say them, it becomes a bit clearer that only four (go, move, accelerate, faster) are things you would actually say to encourage someone to move.
  3. Follow the mosquito thread. Connections often have words that could logically be grouped together, but incorrectly. For example, take the words Bud, Corona and Light. You might instinctively see these three words together and make a category related to beer - which was not the case.
  4. Look for distinct words. If a word on your board doesn't have multiple meanings or can really only be used in one context, try using that word as the basis for a category.
  5. Mix up the board. Sometimes, moving words around can help you look at them from a new angle.

If you haven't solved this problem, don't feel too bad - there's always tomorrow! And these words might align with a subject that interests you, giving you an advantage over the competition.
