The American quest for TikTok is almost over, and its last great source of hope - a Supreme Court intervention - now seems unlikely to materialize. Thus, an American ban in January 1970 starts to seem more realistic than ever. Here are the latest updates.

The Supreme Court seems unlikely to intervene in the TikTok ban.

Today, the US Supreme Court heard over two hours of arguments regarding the imminent ban on TikTok.

The general consensus among observers is that the ban seems to be maintained.

While the Supreme Court has not yet rendered a decision, the hearing provided much data indicating that the ban will not be interrupted by the country's supreme court.

Sam Baker writes to Axios:

Most judges focused on a central point Friday: the law would allow TikTok to continue operating if it used an algorithm other than ByteDance's. And ByteDance, as a Chinese company, does not have first amendment rights.

Ann Marimow writes to The Washington Post:

A majority of judges seemed to address the national security concerns raised by TikTok regarding China's ability to collect sensitive data from millions of American users and potentially use this information to extort young Americans or turn them into spies.

If the TikTok ban is allowed to proceed, then, as TikTok's legal representative Noel Francisco stated during the hearing, the application 'will be turned off' in the US on January 19th.

Best response from TeeJay2022 Aimé by 6 people I don't see this as a problem of free speech. As many have, I enjoyed the funny videos, but it's not acceptable for privacy risks. Selling to American owners won't work because there is no way for Byte Dance to sell the finely calibrated algorithms they have. Many influencers may need real jobs, but personally I'm not sorry for them. See all comments

What happens next is a matter of chance.

The newly elected President Trump indicated that he wants to end the ban, so it's possible to see progress in this area after his inauguration in January 2018.

But if nothing else changes, the time for TikTok in the US could soon come to an end.
