The delay is finally over as the Linux Mint team has published the latest ISO images of the Linux Mint 22.1 release "Xia", which are available for download from the official mirrors.

Based on the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) operating system and powered by the Linux 6.8 kernel, Linux Mint 22.1 "Xia" introduces the Cinnamon 6.4 desktop environment with an integrated Night Mode feature that supports both XOrg and Wayland, a new default theme, native dialog boxes, improved Wayland session, simplified sound amplification settings, enhanced notifications, Nemo improvements, and much more.

It also includes an updated file renaming utility Bulky which allows you to remove accents from file names, support for thumbnails for .ora (OpenRaster) files, improved energy management, and modernized APT dependencies for a better package management experience using new tools such as Aptkit and Captain.

One of the major projects was a thorough review and modernization of the APT dependencies. The goal was to clean up obsolete components, rationalize them, and create a simplified set of package management tools and libraries for the future," notes the release notes.

Some advantages of modernizing APT dependencies include improved translations eliminating old localization issues, better quality, a simpler architecture strengthening compatibility with Wayland in the Update Manager, and easier development of necessary libraries.

While these modifications may be invisible to most users, they prepare the ground for a smoother and more reliable experience. New problems can now be easily resolved. This modernization ensures that Linux Mint package management remains robust, user-friendly, and ready for the future.

This is a long-term support version that will receive security updates until 2029. You can download Linux Mint 22.1 now from the official website or the download links below.
