Siri is undergoing a period of transition. Apple says we've entered a "new era" for Siri, but this change is happening progressively.

• iOS 18.1 launched a new design for Siri and some minor improvements.
• IOS 18.2 introduced a powerful integration with ChatGPT
• iOS 18.4 is where the most significant improvements will be made

So far, ChatGPT assistance has been among the best features of this new era of Siri.

But in some aspects, Apple's need to mix OpenAI's chatbot shows additional evidence of Siri's inherent weaknesses.

However, many of these weaknesses will be resolved by iOS 18.4 next year.

Three New Superpowers for Siri Arrive with iOS 18.4

iOS 18.4 will be rolled out to all users in April and made available as a beta version at the earliest next month.

When it arrives, Siri will have three new super-powers:

1. New app actions: Apple claims that Siri will be able to perform hundreds of new actions within Apple apps without ever needing to access them. App intents will also bring this capability to third-party supported apps.
2. Personal context awareness: As a real assistant, you'll be able to refer to texts you've received, past events from your calendar, and other personal data for truly intelligent Siri assistance.
3. Screen awareness: Siri will know what's on your screen, allowing you to perform actions on what you're looking at easily.

If these features work as expected and with a reliability level we all hope for (and yes, I'm skeptical), it could be transformative.

iOS 18.4 Features on Vision Pro Could Be Transformative.

Apple's intelligence isn't yet supported on the Vision Pro—though it's likely to arrive this year.

Imagine what Siri capabilities from iOS 18.4 could be like on the Vision Pro.

When Siri can perform advanced app actions and understand what you're looking at and your personal context, spatial computing can finally fulfill its sci-fi promise.

Siri updates will be excellent for the iPhone, but they could be crucial for Apple's success in 'spatial computing'.

The dream of simply talking to your computer and having it act intelligently as a result is becoming more realistic.
