Cinq jours ago, Spotify challenged a report that Apple Music pays artists more than twice the average rates of Spotify. In completely unrelated news, Spotify published a blog post announcing record payments to the music industry in 2024.

Maybe it's a coincidence, and it took four weeks to calculate the figures! Regardless, Spotify says it paid $1 billion to the music industry last year, nearly corresponding to the global revenues of recorded music from a decade ago:

In 2014, the music industry reached a low point when global revenues from recorded music reached $13 billion. Spotify's annual contribution at that time was about $1 billion, with around 15 million paying subscribers.

In 2024, Spotify alone paid a record of $1 billion to the music industry – which represents almost $60 billion since our founding.

To many people, these figures might enter one's ears and come out the other. And they might wonder why Spotify continues to make such a fuss about it.

The rest of the blog post, written by Spotify's VP of Music David Kaefer, explains how Spotify generates revenues that finance the music industry.

The three legs of the stool include making Spotify a more attractive service, converting ad-supported listeners into paying subscribers, and valuing new markets with locally engaging prices.

Another positive indicator for Spotify? Offering a life to independent artists:

In fact, we estimate that in 2014, around 10,000 artists generated at least $10,000 per year on Spotify. Today, more than 10,000 artists generate more than $100,000 per year solely from Spotify. That's a beautiful thing.

My entry point is as follows: greater transparency in how artists – not just the music industry in general – are paid, is welcome. However, it is clear that Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming services are responsible for creating great products that make payment more comfortable than piracy.
