The market for portable handheld computers has exploded with the popularity of the Steam Deck. But what if you created a device... well, not a handheld device? Someone did, and it's probably the most terrible thing I've seen recently.

A tinkerer known as "crastinator-pro" managed to transform the popular Valve Steam Deck console into an impressively compact portable computer, which he nicknamed the "Steam Brick". The original Steam Deck is a bit bulky, but that can be attributed to what it is: a console you can carry and play games on the go. The goal here was to make it even smaller, but the compromises involved concerned all the elements that made the console portable. In essence, it's essentially a Steam Deck, except it loses its integrated screen and controllers. This, in fact, turns the device into a small desktop computer that you need to plug into a monitor and controller.

The result is a device much smaller and lighter than the original Steam Deck, measuring 193.5 x 126.5 x 21 mm and weighing 474 grams. It's pretty small, to begin with. This makes the "Steam Brick" about 24% lighter and much more portable, easily fitting into a bag without needing a protective case due to the absence of a fragile screen. However, this portability comes at a cost. You lose what makes the Steam Deck special, namely that you can play anywhere. If you're looking for a small portable computer for gaming, there are many options that are probably better.

The person who created this advises that it shouldn't be a mod for people sensitive to stress. The mod is actually quite impressive and involves cutting the aluminum frame of the Steam Deck and adapting the remaining components to a 3D-printed body. But still, have we perhaps pushed science a bit too far?
