These three improvements will make AirTag 2 much more useful.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on a second generation of its popular and affordable object tracker, the AirTag, which made its debut in 2021. Here's what we expect from Apple with AirTag 2.
Improvements
A Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman a few weeks ago noted that the AirTag 2 "has progressed in production tests," and there are three key updates to look forward to:
- Better coverage
- Improved radio chip
- High data protection level
Apple has stated that it will introduce a new ultra-wide band chip in the next generation of AirTag, allowing for a maximum distance tripled with identification accuracy. This means you can track your AirTags from 30-90 meters away, instead of the current 10-30 meters of the current version. A new radioless chip might also improve position accuracy in less densely populated areas.
In the past, people have used AirTags for capturing and some have completely modified the AirTags to disable the integrated speaker, making it more difficult for Apple to alert users about the absence of an AirTag nearby. Improvements in anti-lost features would be hopeful in making it easier for objective users to find their AirTags.
Release Date
The AirTag 2 is expected to be released mid-2025, according to Bloomberg:
Apple is working on a new AirTag - codified as B589 - for release around the middle of next year.
For now, if you are considering purchasing the current generation of AirTag, it is currently on sale. A single AirTag costs $24 and a dozen costs $69.99. With a dozen, this equates to approximately $18 per AirTag!
