The Apple's AirTag tag has always been a good option for tracking vehicle location, and now a Colorado police department is beginning to distribute them for free to help prevent car theft.

CBS Colorado shared a story on its YouTube channel yesterday about the latest Arvada, Colorado (via AppleInsider) distribution of AirTags.

The report indicates that the police are trying to reduce the number of hit-and-runs by distributing free AirTag detectors and Tile to the community. The first such distributions have just taken place, and they plan another one.

A key part of the gift is a sticker included that can be affixed to a vehicle to warn potential criminals.

The sticker states that if the car is stolen, the police will be able to track it because it 'is equipped with tracking.'

Of course, this would require that the owner of the AirTag share their location with authorities. There are no additional conditions on the AirTag gift that grant officers special tracking privileges.

But in case of theft, yes, the AirTag would help police track the stolen vehicle.

It's interesting to see if this program will lead to a noticeable reduction in car thieves in the Arvada area, especially if we start seeing more free AirTag offers becoming common.
