According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on a second generation of its popular and affordable object tracking device, AirTag, which made its debut in 2021. Here's what we expect from Apple with AirTag 2.

Improvements

Recently, in a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the AirTag 2 has 'continued production tests', and there are three key updates to look forward to:

• Better range of action
• Improved wireless chip impulse
• High priority on privacy

Apple might introduce a new ultrawide band chip in the next AirTag update, allowing for a maximum tracking distance triple with precision in search. This means you can track AirTags up to 30-90 meters away, instead of the current 10-30 meters. A new radioless chip could also improve position accuracy in less densely populated areas.

In the past, people have used AirTags for surveillance, and some have completely modified the built-in speaker, making it more difficult for Apple to let users know that a nearby AirTag is present. Improvements in antistalking features hopefully make it easier for target users to find AirTags.

Release Date

The AirTag 2 is expected to be released mid-2025, according to Bloomberg:

Apple is working on a new AirTag — coded as B589 — for release around the middle of next year.
