Apple Intelligence's AI notification summarization feature in iOS 18.1 has been highlighted for errors by the BBC. Recent examples include incorrect summaries of news stories, such as a false report about Luigi Mangione disappearing and an inaccurate statement that Luke Littler won the PDC World Championship before participating in the finals. The BBC is monitoring these issues closely. There are concerns about the accuracy of AI-generated news summaries, especially when summarizing breaking news. Some users have suggested that Apple may disable AI summaries for default news apps to improve accuracy.

The summaries of Apple Intelligence notifications, in my opinion, are one of the first AI features that have caught attention. But they are not without flaws, as the BBC has continued to highlight today through various new examples. Here are the most recent errors of Apple Intelligence in news notifications.

The BBC News continues to highlight the errors of Apple Intelligence.

Last week, the BBC publicly expressed its concerns with Apple regarding the new AI notification summarization feature.

Added in iOS 18.1, this feature allows Apple Intelligence to summarize information from a notification instead of providing the actual written content.

Apple's Intelligence is currently available in beta, so Apple says you should expect errors and report them to allow the system to be continuously improved.

The BBC is carefully listening to that news. The December example involved AI that, through summarizing the BBC News alert, stated that Luigi Mangione had disappeared on his own. This was completely false.

Today, Imran Rahman-Jones of the BBC has published some other examples of Apple Intelligence errors reported by his users (through AppleInsider).

A news summary by Apple incorrectly stated that darts thrower Luke Littler had won the PDC World Championship before participating in the finals.

The incorrect summary was written by artificial intelligence (AI) and is based on a BBC story about Littler's semi-final victory on Thursday evening.

In just a few hours, another AI news summary informed some users of the BBC Sport app that Rafael Nadal had declared himself gay.

There are certainly many other examples that users have seen, so it wouldn't be surprising if stories like this continue to become more common.

News summaries are prone to errors for all types of apps, but it's understandable that they can be particularly problematic when summarizing breaking news.

Summarizing the content of an already existing summary seems a bit superfluous at first, so I wonder if Apple's last solution will be to disable AI summaries for default news apps.

Do you think these Apple Intelligence errors are a serious problem? How were the summaries in your experience? Let us know in the comments.
