Le fake news su Apple Intelligence possono essere risolte con una semplice modifica.

Apple's AI intelligence notifications are causing controversy due to their tendency to create fake news. The BBC has highlighted several instances where summaries provided by Apple Intelligence have contained inaccurate information. Despite this, Apple plans to update the software with a modified UI that will further clarify when displayed text is a summary. Some key points include: - Apple promises an update to clarify AI-generated text. - There are concerns about the potential for false information in news summaries. - A proposal has been suggested by Jason Snell of Six Colors, which involves disabling AI summaries for news apps by default with user consent. - The current solution proposed by Apple is not considered sufficient by some. The article concludes that a single key modification could solve the problem, and many users are likely to agree with this approach.

The summaries of Apple Intelligence notifications are causing a stir for accidentally creating fake news, as highlighted particularly by the BBC. Apple has planned a modified UI, but here's why it doesn't go far enough and what might be the true solution.

BBC Highlights AI Failures with News Summaries

The BBC expressed serious concern twice regarding the bot Apple Intelligence error in summarizing news and providing false information as a consequence.

Examples include statements that:

  • A person committed suicide, even though they were still alive.
  • An athlete won a competition that never took place.
  • Another athlete revealed to be gay, but this was also false

Apple has promised to send an update of the software that "further clarifies when the displayed text is a summary". In essence, there will be a change in the UI and Apple will continue to make successive modifications to the beta feature.

If you have used Apple Intelligence's notification summaries, you probably saw some incorrect information as well.

In many cases, it is not so important if an iMessage or email message is summarized incorrectly. If you are like me, you will probably still read the original message.

For breaking news, for many of us, reading more than the subtitle does not happen often.

That's why I think Apple should exclude news apps from AI summaries by default.

The Main Problem to Solve for Apple Intelligence Summaries

In recent times, Jason Snell of Six Colors has presented his proposals for correcting this AI problem. I agree with Snell that the solution proposed by Apple for the UI does not go far enough. Here, perhaps the company is convinced it can solve this problem thanks to its continuous invisible improvements.

But there is a more effective solution, at least in the short term.

Apple should disable summaries for news apps.

Users can re-enable them if they wish, but only for news apps. The feature should have a special consent request.

Why? Because many people read only the headlines of articles, not the full article.

But also because —because it is very important— titles are already summaries.

Editors have already chosen carefully the words they want to use in a headline to summarize the content of an article.

Apple does not need to interfere by creating its own 'summary of summary.'

In the BBC News example, the problematic summaries were the result of Apple Intelligence summarizing a stack of different news articles. Losing this synthesized stack is a small inconvenience to bear to ensure that news alerts remain accurate.

Apple AI Fake News: Summary

For now, Apple has avoided any real controversy with its image generation features in iOS 18.2. This is a big success that many of its competitors have not been able to achieve. But the news summaries are starting to cause a similar headache.

In six months or a year, when Apple will have improved its AI models and taken them out of beta, perhaps the summaries of news apps could return as a default option. For now though, a single key modification would solve this problem. And I think you won't find many users who refuse it—especially if the participation option remains.
