The intelligence of Apple has arrived, but Siri and the suite of artificial intelligence features from Apple are far from the level of competitors like OpenAI, Anthropic, and others – especially without an Apple chatbot. For this reason, the company has hired an internal software expert to help correct the path of Apple's artificial intelligence efforts. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has the report:

The executive at Apple Inc., Kim Vorrath, a veteran of the famous company for repairing difficult products and bringing important projects to market, has a new assignment: straighten out artificial intelligence and Siri.

Vorrath, vice president in charge of program management, was transferred this week to Apple’s division of artificial intelligence and machine learning, according to people familiar with the matter. Seconding John Giannandrea, vice president of AI, these people say that they requested anonymity because the transfer has not been publicly announced.

Gurman adds that Vorrath played a fundamental role in Apple Vision Pro’s recent launch on the market. Before that, she helped manage the original iPhone software group with project management. She notes that she had previously advised the group reporting to John Giannandrea.

Before joining Giannandrea's organization, Vorrath dedicated several weeks to advising Kelsey Peterson, who was previously head of program management at the group. Peterson now refers to Vorrath – as will two other AI executives, Cindy Lin and Marc Schonbrun. Giannandrea, who entered Apple from Google in 2018, disclosed these changes in a draft sent to employees.

Apple still needs to send the integrated version of Siri that it showed during an iOS 18 preview at its developer conference in June 2024. The current integration is quite limited. We expect that version of Siri to arrive in beta as soon as iOS 18.4 beta becomes available, since iOS 18.3 is almost ready for public release.

Details on what we can expect from the new Siri when it receives the Apple Intelligence update:

With screen awareness, Siri will be able to understand and act on users' content in multiple apps over time. For example, if a friend sends a user a new address via Messages, the recipient can say: "Add this address to your contacts tab.

With Apple Intelligence, Siri will be able to perform hundreds of new actions within and between Apple and third-party apps. For example, a user could say: "Open the cicada article from my reading list," or "Send photos from Saturday's barbecue to Malia," and Siri will take care of it.

Siri will be able to provide personalized information for the user and device information. For example, a user could say: "Sing that podcast Jamie recommended me," and Siri will find and play the episode without the user having to remember if it was mentioned in a message or email. Or they might ask: "When does Mom's flight arrive?" and Siri will find the flight details and cross-reference them with real-time tracking information to provide the arrival time.

iOS 18.3 highlights some of the challenges for Apple’s artificial intelligence problems. For example, Apple has opted to disable notification syntheses for news and entertainment alerts after a series of inaccurate syntheses that incorrectly informed users. Other notification syntheses will appear in italics in the text to denote the synthesis format compared to the actual notification text.
