The story of the United States with TikTok seems almost over, and its last major source of hope - a Supreme Court intervention - now seems unlikely. So, a flag in the United States on January 19th is becoming increasingly realistic. Here's the latest news.

The Supreme Court seems unlikely to block the TikTok flag.

Today, the US Supreme Court has heard over two hours of debate concerning the next TikTok flag.

The general consensus among observers? The flag seems to be maintained.

Although the Supreme Court has not yet issued a ruling, the proceedings provided enough data indicating that the ban will not be blocked by the country's highest court.

Sam Baker writes on Axios:

The majority of judges focused on a central point on Thursday: the law would allow TikTok to continue operations if it used a different algorithm from ByteDance. And ByteDance, as a Chinese company, does not have the rights of the First Amendment.

Marimow Ann writes to The Washington Post:

A majority of judges seem to have accepted Congress's nationalist concerns regarding China's government's ability to collect sensitive data from millions of American users and use that information to threaten young Americans or turn them into spies.

If the TikTok ban is authorized to proceed, then, as TikTok's legal representative, Noel Francisco has stated during the hearing that 'the app will go offline' in the United States on January 19th.

The best comment by TeeJay2022 - 6 people found it useful. I don't see this as a problem of free speech. As many do, I enjoyed the funny videos, but it's not worth the risks for privacy. Selling to US owners won't work because Byte Dance will never sell the algorithms they have finely optimized. Many "influencers" may need to find real jobs, but personally, I don't care about them. What happens next is up to anyone to guess.

The newly elected President Trump indicated that he wants to stop the ban, so it's possible that after his inauguration on January 20th, we may see a movement in that direction.

However, if nothing changes, TikTok's time in the United States may be short-lived.
