The last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that the iPhone 17 Air would cost less than the iPhone Pro models, contrary to the long-held expectation that the new ultra-slim iPhone would be even more expensive than the iPhone Pro Max. At that point, the phone actually makes a lot more sense.

New price whisper

In a new report, The Wall Street Journal said the following about the rumored iPhone 17 Air:

Starting next year, Apple intends to present an iPhone thinner than the approximate 8mm profile of current models, people familiar with its intentions have said. The model is expected to be cheaper than the Pro models, with a simplified camera system to reduce costs.

This goes against what had previously been reported. In May, when The Information revealed some of the first details about the device, this is what they declared:

The thinnest iPhone could be released alongside the iPhone 17, scheduled for September 2025, according to three people with direct knowledge and two other family members involved in the project. It might be priced higher than the iPhone Pro Max, currently Apple's most expensive model starting at $1,200.

Why it matters

Certainly, more expensive than the iPhone Pro Max implies a price of at least $1,199 – maybe even up to $1,299. For a thinner iPhone with fewer features, reduced battery life, and a single camera. This didn't seem very worth it. Certainly would have looked really cool, and potentially laid the groundwork for future iPhones to be thinner, but wouldn't make much sense to buy.

Recently, we also learned that the iPhone 17 Air will lack a second speaker, falling back to just an audio output port. With so many compromises, it wouldn't make sense to pay such a price difference.

However, if the new reports are correct, we're now waiting for a more economical Pro model. It's not clear exactly what this means, as there might be an increase in the iPhone 17 Pro price, but regardless of that, the iPhone 17 Air should cost less than $1,000. If there is no price increase on the iPhone 17 Pro, then the Air could be sold for as little as $899, taking the same price point as the iPhone 16 Plus.

This drastically changes the value proposition here, making the new model up to $400 cheaper than we initially thought.

Summary

Certainly, you would be losing battery life and a second camera compared to the iPhone 16 Plus, and it would lack a second扬声器. However, you'd get the cool, sleek iPhone thinner - for the same price you paid last year. Apple probably bet this will be the draw. This will be the first iPhone in many years that has an appearance truly different from the previous model.

Additionally, unlike the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, the basic iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will be equipped with ProMotion displays at 120Hz, making them more appealing to tech enthusiasts.
