The iPhone sales market in China
iPhone sales in China have faced increasing pressure over the past few years due to a combination of government consumer pressure to buy Chinese brands and an unexpected resurgence of Huawei as a luxury smartphone competitor.
Pressure on Chinese citizens has increased over the years, fueled by a trade war with the United States in 2019.
The use of an iPhone in China is now seen as embarrassing by some consumers, according to a local report. The combined impact of the Trump administration's trade war on China and Huawei's export blacklist is further solidifying the 'Boycott Apple' movement in the country.
For a couple of years, Apple was protected from a chip 5G export ban to China, which meant that Huawei could no longer compete effectively with iPhones. However, the Chinese brand found a way to obtain 5G chips in 2023, allowing it to once again compete against Apple.
Apple has shown reluctance to respond officially with discounts, preferring to offer hidden reductions to third-party retailers, who then pass these discounts on to consumers. However, the company began discounting its iPhones in 2022 and has done so many times since. The most recent example is a year-end promotion that starts tomorrow.
The trade of foreign smartphones continues to decline.
It's not just Apple: new government data cited by Reuters has shown that sales of all non-Chinese smartphone brands continue to decline.
The number of shipments of foreign-branded smartphones, including Apple iPhones, to China decreased by 47.4% in November compared to the previous year, according to data released Thursday by a government-affiliated research company, the third time this trend has occurred [...]
The decline follows a 44.25% reduction in the shipment of foreign smartphones in October, extending a decreasing trend on the world's largest smartphone market.
