In independent of whether you can still use the service, TikTok remains very banned in the United States. President Trump has promised not to fine TikTok and its service providers to continue managing the services, but it is only a promise. In addition, he signed an executive order officially suspending the ban, but there are large probabilities that that executive order is not actually legal.

For some reason or another, Apple (and Google) have both decided that they do not want to take the risk. If a court decides subsequently that Trump's promises are not legitimate, Apple could be responsible for fines up to 850 billion dollars. It's none of their business.

TikTok not available in the App Store in the United States

TikTok is not available in the App Store. When you first hear this, you might think that you can't get the app if you haven't already installed it – which doesn't sound too serious. At the end of the day, if you really cared about TikTok, you probably would have already installed it.

However, there are much larger consequences to the absence of TikTok on the App Store: if for any reason you need to reinstall the application, you won't be able to do so.

This means that if you buy a new iPhone, you won't be able to officially install TikTok. Even if you transfer your data. This also means that if you seriously damage your iPhone and have to replace the entire device, you're out of luck when it comes to TikTok. It applies in the same way even if you need to restore your iPhone due to a software problem.

In Apple's public support document published on January 19th, the same date on which the ban on TikTok became law, the company listed this fact:

If you have already installed these apps on the device, they will remain on it. But they cannot be re-downloaded if deleted or restored if transferring the device to a new model. In-app purchases and new subscriptions are no longer possible.

If you're worried about TikTok, take care of your current iPhone as best you can. And if your current iPhone is running out of days, keep it alive for a little longer before updating. It won't be easy to reinstall the app afterwards. You will unfortunately be forced to resort to the website.
