The slow rollout of Apple Wallet digital driver's licenses in the United States continues to progress. However, in the land of the river, the British government has just announced its own solution for digital IDs.

The pilot for British driver IDs will arrive later in 2025.

Today a new announcement on gov.uk describes an app arriving designed to host government documents, including the driver's license.

In the statement:

The British will have the option of using a mobile digital version of their driving license to easily demonstrate their age when purchasing items subject to age limits online and in person - just as proving their right to drive.

A mobile driver's license will be one of the first digital documents in the GOV.UK wallet that will be launched this year, allowing people to prove their age from their phone in stores or online, announced Peter Kyle, Secretary for Science today.

It should sound as if the implementation of driver IDs is starting as a prototype a few months after 2025.

The support for the entire range of government documents that are soon to be digitized will expire at the end of 2027. At that time, "all government services must offer an alternative digital version along with paper or card credentials."

Unfortunately, while the announcement mentions the new app available on iOS and Android, there is no news regarding the integration of Apple Wallet.

We hope that the digital IDs provided by the UK's new app can also be easily added to Wallet. However, currently there is no indication that this will be the case.
