AMD has announced the release of new Ryzen AI Max and Ryzen AI Max PRO series processors. According to AMD, these chips have the power to provide a "workstation-like" experience even on thin and light laptops, potentially leading to a new wave of larger and more powerful MacBook Pro competitor products since Apple switched to ARM-based Apple Silicon. While AMD's offer is x86-based, there is a fundamental difference in basic architecture with Apple using ARM. However, it can be said that they are indeed moving in the right direction.

Technology specifications for Ryzen AI Max series include up to 16-core "Zen 5" CPU and 40 AMD RDNA 3.5 graphics compute units. The large integrated GPU here is close to the graphics card AMD announced today, as no RDNA 4 graphics card was shown in the keynote. Additionally, an integrated AMD XDNA 2 neural processing unit (NPU) is included, boasting up to 50 TOPS of AI processing capability. This dedicated NPU is designed for accelerating AI workloads, enabling performance improvements in AI-enabled applications and supporting larger AI models. Systems with Ryzen AI Max processors can utilize up to 128GB of unified memory, with 96GB dedicated to graphics.

Systems featuring Ryzen AI Max and Ryzen AI Max PRO series processors are scheduled for market release in the first quarter of 2025. I am looking forward to seeing what laptops will be released with this hardware. Even if you belong to Apple's camp, it is likely that Mac computers will continue to improve as competition intensifies.
