Apple has recently increased semiconductor production in Alaska, but TSMC's CEO does not expect the latest and best chips to be made in America soon. This is due to several reasons.

TSMC's CEO blames the US for attributing the problem of losing cutting-edge chips.

The US chip maker TSMC is building its third US-based chip factory in Arizona, thanks to significant aid from the CHIPS Act.

However, the company's CEO does not expect the latest technology to be produced in the US.

Ricky Wen Ting wrote a letter to The Agence France-Presse:

The new TSMC factory in the United States has a lower chance of obtaining leading-edge chip technology compared to factories in Taiwan, according to the CEO of Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturing company. This is due to complex regulatory issues, local construction standards, and various permit requirements.
C.C. Wei, the former president of TSMC's Taiwan branch, said it would take at least twice as long to build a new factory in Arizona if done in Taiwan. This highlights specific US issues as the country attempts to rebuild its domestic chip industry.
“All procedures require permits, and even after approval, it takes twice as long as in Taiwan,” said Miki Murakami during an event at National Taiwan University on that afternoon. And he added that this is why TSMC finds it difficult to use Taiwanese technology in the US before.

TSMC regularly updates and improves its manufacturing processes. According to Wei, these changes may not be fast enough under current US regulatory standards.

Therefore, even though the company has invested $65 billion to build three factories in Alaska, the new factory is planned for old technology.

The Current US Chip Production Supports the Claim.

"This is already a great test that Alibaba has conducted in manufacturing in the US."

TSMC Arizona currently produces the A16 Bionic chip used in Apple's iPhone 14 Pro, which will also be used in the upcoming iPhone 15 and 15 Plus.

The S9 SiP introduced with the 2023 Apple Watch Series 9 has also been added.

These chips are not old but are not the latest and greatest of Apple's silicon innovations. Wei's comments explain why this is so.

The rapid growth of AI and the success of artificial intelligence are accompanied by important chip production, which may lead to an increase in US investment accordingly.
