The start of the new year is when many people try to establish new habits. Here, we explain why you might want to give Apple's apps another chance with the recent changes in Journal and Fitness apps.

Significant Updates for Unused Fitness and Recording Apps at Apple

iOS does not share usage data, but I believe that Journal and Fitness are among the two most unused pre-installed apps on an iPhone.

However, each app has many advantages, especially useful for users who want to create healthy habits and routines for a new year.

A few months ago, Apple added various powerful improvements to each app in iOS 18.

In this article, I will share the latest information based on Apple's official release notes and my personal knowledge.

“Journal App with Added New Features”

The app was first released in iOS 17.2, but it had several important drawbacks. However, the app has been significantly improved in iOS 18.

New features include:

  • Mood: Record your mood within the Journal app and include emotions and feelings recorded in the Health app as part of the proposal.
  • Insight: Track your journal goals with continuous days, calendar, and other fun statistics.
  • Easily find past entries and sort them according to your preferred order.
  • Widgets: Available on both the home screen and lock screen. The journal displays the current consecutive days and prompts for writing, allowing you to reflect on that moment.
  • Extended text format options include text color, bullet list, dashed list, numbered list, and blockquote.
  • Voice transcription: Voice transcription of saved recordings in the app is now available.
  • New sort options: Sort by date written instead of chronological order.
  • Print: You can now export your journal entries as PDFs for printing.

I prefer using a physical keyboard when journaling, so I have been waiting for an iPad app before fully adopting the Journal app. However, these changes make the app even more appealing than before.

The Fitness app received a large redesign in iOS 18, improving customizability while enhancing the Fitness+ feature and navigation.

In response to broader customization trends in iOS 18, various content cards that can be added, removed, or moved are included in the Fitness summary screen according to your preferences.

To customize your display, scroll down to the page and click "Edit Summary." Next, click the "+" icon to add new cards. To rearrange existing cards, tap and hold a card and drag it to a different position. This makes it easier to find personalized recommendations, motivational reminders, and additional features.

The new navigation options provide advantages for Fitness+. Currently, there are four tabs in the Fitness+ tab:

  • “You”
  • Explore
  • Library
  • Search

These can all be found within a single Fitness+ tab on an iPhone. On an iPad, these options serve as the main tab bar items.

With these various new screens, it's easier to find personalized recommendations, motivational reminders, and access additional features.
