Apple plans to update the Pro Display XDR with Apple Silicon and quantum dot display technology in its next generation model, expected to be released in 2025 or early 2026.
Apple introduced the Pro Display XDR in 2019, priced at $4999, without an included stand, and offered an optional Pro Stand for $999. Despite advancements in display technology, Apple has not changed its product. While details are limited, some small details help understand what Apple plans.

Apple Lithium-Ion Battery

Apple released the Studio Display in 2022, offering unique advantages compared to many other displays. It is powered by the A13 Bionic chip, enabling cool features like Center Stage and spatial audio. The Pro Display XDR, released three years ago, does not include the Apple Silicon chipset. However, according to a Bloomberg report in 2022, Apple plans to address this in its next generation model.
Apple is developing multiple new external monitors, including an updated version of the Pro Display XDR released simultaneously with the 2019 Intel Mac Pro. However, it is possible that the company's next high-end display could be released after the Mac Pro. This is because computers are developing more rapidly than monitors. New monitors, such as the Studio Display released simultaneously with the Mac Studio, will also include Apple Silicon. This means that the monitor will rely on the connected computer for resources to a lesser extent.
Assuming this rumor is true, the Pro Display XDR 2 is likely to include the Apple Silicon chipset. This would mean it could potentially include built-in cameras and speakers. It currently does not. Quantum Dot Display According to display analyst Ross Young, Apple plans to use quantum dot film in the next generation of Pro Display XDR, similar to the new M4 MacBook Pro.
Currently, Apple is using quantum dot film in the MacBook Pro, so it is looking forward to replacing the KSF film and KSF chassis in other Apple products. KSF film can be seen in the previous MiniLED MacBook Pro and Mac Pro Display XDR. The next version of the Mac Pro Display is also expected to use it.
This document does not clearly state whether Apple plans to use mini-LED in the next generation of Pro Display XDR. Currently, Pro Display XDR uses a high-quality IPS panel with local dimming, and specific information about refresh rates is lacking. However, Apple hopes to provide a 120Hz panel, which MacBook Pros have used for over three years, and the price of Pro Display XDR is over $5000.

Other Rumors

Last year, supply chain analyst Min Chi Kou reported that Apple plans to release a 27-inch miniLED display in 2025, which is not related to the Pro Display XDR but is still related due to the 32-inch display size. Kou called this a "high-end monitor." According to Kou, this display will be thin and have narrow bezels. Apple has reported that it is developing a 7K resolution display for future Pro Display XDR.

Release Date

The release of Pro Display XDR 2 is expected to be in the second half of 2025 or early 2026. However, specific information is still lacking.
