Starting today, BenQ begins accepting pre-orders for its first 27-inch 5K Thunderbolt 4 designer monitor. The BenQ PD2730S, announced last autumn, competes seriously with Apple Studio Display in the same pixel density range at more than $1600. Recently, I used a $1200 BenQ 27-inch 5K Thunderbolt 4 designer monitor with an M4 Mac mini for several weeks and found some aspects more impressive than those of the Studio Display.

Practical and Broad

For many Mac users, third-party monitors are often a compromise. Apple produces high-priced monitors with impressive resolution and design, focusing on compatibility and simplicity.

However, the BenQ 27-inch designer monitor offers more options to some Mac users than the Studio Display does.

A Respectable Mac Monitor

But how do their display features compare?

Many Mac users prefer standard glass displays with nanotexture anti-glare options provided by Apple, which add $300 to the price of a monitor. The BenQ Designer Monitor uses its own Nano Matte Panel.

Both monitors feature LED-backlit IPS panels with a refresh rate of 60Hz and a maximum resolution of 5120×2880 on a 27-inch display. Apple Studio Display can produce up to 600 nits of brightness, while the BenQ Designer Monitor reaches up to 400 nits. Apple sends its displays in P3 reference mode, but BenQ supports Display P3 and similar M-Book calibration. Additionally, BenQ supports VESA HDR400 for displaying high dynamic range content with a contrast ratio of 2000:1.

While Apple may be at the top in gaming on its 5K 27-inch display, many users appreciate either anti-glare screens or height-adjustable stands. The Apple Studio Display already has a standard price of $1600 and is not competitive. Most people would not pay $2300 for it—neither would I.

The BenQ 27-inch 5K Target Battery4 Designer Monitor can be purchased directly from the company starting today for $1,199. Units will be shipped on a per-unit basis beginning March 1st. BenQ has also started accepting reservations for the PD3226G monitor at $1,099. This is a 32-inch 4K UHD 144Hz refresh rate 95% P3 Target Battery4 Designer Monitor. Availability on Amazon will be after the initial launch period.
