Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a renewed focus on "OG Facebook" in 2023, aiming to increase its cultural impact and user engagement. This involves prioritizing product development over short-term financial gains and potentially revisiting features from the platform's early days. Zuckerberg believes there are opportunities to significantly expand Facebook's influence beyond its current reach of over 3 billion monthly users.
「元々のFacebook」の復活が今年メタにとって最も重要な課題だ。

Yesterday, Meta announced its quarterly earnings, sharing updates on Threads, Instagram, and of course, the metaverse. During this announcement, CEO Mark Zuckerberg indicated something interesting as a new priority for the year: "Going back to the early Facebook."

Zuckerberg is focusing on "OG Facebook" this year.

Facebook has undoubtedly been a massive success for Meta by any reasonable measure. It boasts billions of active users - billions!

However, in today's fragmented social media landscape, Facebook has become something many people put on the back burner.

But Zuckerberg seems to want to change that this year.

According to the CEO during Meta's earnings call:

Facebook has over 3 billion monthly users, and we are focusing on amplifying its cultural influence. I’m excited about going back to the original Facebook this year.

Initially, this comment about "the original Facebook" didn't offer much detail. However, later, the CEO was asked for further clarification.

According to official Meta records, he explained:

I think there are many opportunities to increase its cultural impact far beyond its current influence. And that’s a fun and interesting goal for us, and it will guide product development in interesting directions that we haven't focused on as much in the past few years.

This year, we’re going to focus on this area. It’s an investment worth making, and I’m going to put time into it.

[...]

Overall, he seems really excited about where they're going to start...implementation will be key...some of it will go back to how Facebook used to be. So that should be fun.

Zuckerberg hinted that improving the product might mean sacrificing some financial gains. He said, "We may have to make some compromises in order to focus on the areas of product development we're doing, rather than prioritizing maximizing business results in the short term."

I closed my Facebook account over 10 years ago. A few years back, I deleted all my Instagram posts. Last year, I realized I had nothing to follow anymore and deleted that account too. I’ve never used WhatsApp, and never will. I have no interest in what Meta offers, and Zuck trying to go back to the "cool" days doesn't change anything. On a larger scale, I recognize my social media presence has decreased. I rarely post on the two accounts I still have, and I’m thinking of deleting one of them. It was fun for a while, but it wasn’t real social interaction.

I remember those early "OG Facebook" days. They were really fun. But as I got older, Facebook just lost its appeal to me personally.

Some argue that Facebook's cultural decline is because it's no longer "cool." This shift is often blamed on parents and grandparents joining. However, I personally felt the product quality had declined, which led me to stop using Facebook. My Facebook feed became filled with irrelevant information just to increase engagement. For example, I saw every random "like" my friends made. Initially, Facebook was centered around user-generated content from people I cared about.

I'm curious to see what Meta has in store specifically for the return of the original Facebook.

Do you hope that "old Facebook (OG Facebook)" comes back in some way? What do you think it would look like? Let us know in the comments.
