The core fact is that the author has been playing guitar as a hobby since middle school and their tools have evolved over two decades. In 2005, they used a Korg tuner and printed sheet music. Now, in 2023, they use Apple Vision Pro for mixed reality scores and GuitarTuna and Ultimate Guitar Tabs & Chords apps for tuning and learning songs on their iPhone and iPad. The background information highlights the evolution of music-related apps over two decades and how these tools have made it easier to learn and play guitar.

Since middle school, I have been playing the guitar as a hobby. Although my instrument hasn't changed, the tools that allow me to do so have slightly evolved. Besides the built-in GarageBand app, I use these two essential iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps to play the guitar by hobby.

In 2005, I operated the guitar using this kind of Korg tuner and sheet music printed from the school library.

Twenty years later, I can use Apple Vision Pro to view guitar scores in mixed reality while searching for songs.

However, when having fun playing the guitar, AVP is not necessary. For a long time, two apps have been part of my iPhone and iPad toolboxes, which I use when playing the guitar.

Tuning the Guitar

First, GuitarTuna pops up in my head as the most suitable method for tuning my guitar. Its clever name alone makes it a key memory, and searching for "tuna" using Spotlight is part of what guitar litterature entails. If not already done, this should also be done. This app is free for iPhones and iPads and is very intuitive. It starts promoting subscriptions and teaching how to play songs, but I swipe through them to get rid of them. I just want to tune the guitar and leave the app.

The next one is the app version of "Ultimate Guitar Tabs & Chords" that I saw in high school. This app has an integrated tuner feature, but it's not as intuitive as GuitarTuna. It's fun to learn songs relaxingly on either a website or mobile app. For example, in the 2000s, I printed out the highest version of Green Day and blink-182 songs that were broadcast on MTV and used them to memorize them. Today, I use an iPhone and Apple Music.

Compared to twenty years ago, music-related apps are more accessible for learning and playing other instruments like the guitar. However, these two are essential apps on my iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
