Meta has announced a new mobile video editing platform called "Edits" today. This was released just a few hours after TikTok was banned in the US (and as a result, CapCut was also banned). However, TikTok is temporarily restored at present.

Meta had been sitting on new features until now, but this is another example of that. With an announcement by the company during the weekend afternoon announcements, they have unlocked a new mobile-first editing tool called Edits, designed as a replacement for the popular editing tool CapCut.

Adam Mosseri, Instagram's CEO, announced today in Threads about the new "Edits" app. He explained that this app is a tool for those who are passionate about creating videos on their smartphones. He also stated, "With so much happening now, it is our responsibility to provide the best tools to creators no matter what happens." This may be related to the ban of TikTok and CapCut.

Functionally, Edits is expected to offer the following (according to Mosseri's post):

  • A "dedicated inspiration tab"
  • The ability to track ideas in another tab
  • "A large quality camera for video shooting"
  • All the editing tools you expect
  • The ability to share drafts with friends and other creators
  • Easy export to Instagram and strong insights into Reels content

We have not received many additional details beyond this. Meta hopes to share more information this weekend. The company has recently been testing this feature with creators.

Pre-ordering is now possible in the App Store from today, and according to Meta, it will be available on iOS around mid-February. However, the release date on the App Store pre-order page shows March.

"There is no timeline specified for the Android release. The only information we have is that it will come 'soon'."
