Instagram is launching two new features for Reels in the US to compete with TikTok. The updates include a feature that shows users what their friends are interested in and a reply bar for conversations about content, increasing social engagement opportunities. If TikTok's US ban is implemented, these features will continue to grow over time, presenting a rare opportunity for businesses.

Reels provides two new tools for social engagement

TikTok's use in the US is scheduled to officially end this weekend. And, the best competitor for maximum profit from a US ban is Instagram.

Before the surge of new users arrives, Instagram is releasing two updates to Reels (a similar short-form video feature to TikTok).

"Reels starts in the US and expands to other regions with support for the following functions by the Instagram communication team."

Discover what your friends or followers are interested in. By making it easier to see content that a friend liked on Reels (or added a note to), and allowing you to participate.
Start a conversation: Additionally, with the reply bar displayed, you can start a simple conversation about the content you're enjoying. This gives you more opportunities for your reels to be seen by people you haven't followed yet.

"As shown in the image above, when viewing a specific Reels on Instagram, it displays your friends and followers' activities. This makes it easy to see what your friends are interested in."

And by replying to their activities, you can progress further. That is, if a friend has marked a particular feed as favorite, you can reply to that "favorite" — this expands social participation opportunities.

If TikTok's US ban is implemented, additional features of Reels will continue to increase over the next few weeks to several months. For businesses, this opportunity is very special and rare.
