iOS 18.2 has finally arrived, bringing many great Apple Intelligence features and a major redesign of Mail, as well as a new feature to set up new default iPhone apps. Here's how it works: iOS 18.2 introduces expanded default categories and a new settings hub. For several years, the iPhone has provided several options to set up new default apps. For example, in iOS 14, you could set new defaults for Mail and Browser. However, the options were still quite limited. In iOS 18.2, the default app categories are expanded, and new defaults can be set from a convenient new hub. After updating to iOS 18.2, open the Settings app, select an app, and a new menu will appear: Default Apps. This article provides a comprehensive one-stop place to set default apps across 8 different categories on your iPhone.

Changing Default Apps and What It Means

Changing the default means what? Here's Apple's explanation:
Manages the apps that your iPhone automatically uses to send email, browse the web, and more.
For example, when you tap on an email, phone number, or standard URL link, the default application is used. Usually, Apple's own applications are the defaults (e.g., Mail, Messages, Safari, Wallet), but these defaults can be changed. These are all the options, and explanations of what changing the default means:
  • Mail: This app is used to write new emails.
  • Messages: This app is used to write new messages.
  • Phone: This app makes phone calls.
  • Call Filtering: This app is used for call filtering and identification.
  • Browser App: This app is used to open links and browse the web.
  • Passwords and Codes: These apps (multiple options available) are used for AutoFill, and you can select a different app for authentication and QR code settings.
  • Non-Connected App: This app is automatically selected when using NFC with a non-connected reader.
  • Keyboard: These keyboards can be obtained from the Keyboard Switcher.
Note: The specified categories may vary depending on location and Apple's various global policies. In the US, the above 8 categories are available. For example, in the EU, more categories may be displayed. If a third-party app is installed in a specific category, only Apple's own app will be shown in that category. However, by moving to the App Store and downloading alternative apps, new options will appear in the Default Apps section. These options have existed before, but they were scattered across different parts of the settings, making it difficult to find them. In iOS 18.2, 3 new categories were added: Messages, Phone, and Non-Connected App. Have you changed the default apps on your iPhone? Please let us know in the comments.
