iOS 18.3 is scheduled to be released soon. An RC beta version has already been confirmed today. This release includes an update to notification summaries, as well as a feature that automatically enables Apple Intelligence for iPhone users upon installation. The same functionality is also planned for Mac and iPad.

iOS 18.3: Apple Intelligence is now opt-out.

Previously, Apple Intelligence was a set of features that users could choose to use.

When installing iOS 18.1 or 18.2, users were asked whether to enable the AI update and only after confirmation could the feature be used.

In iOS 18.3, this is expected to change.

Apple has released the latest beta version release notes. iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS 15.3 will all automatically enable Apple Intelligence upon installation.

The following are the official details on the changes:

Newly registered or upgraded users to iOS 18.3 will have Apple Intelligence automatically enabled during the initial setup of their iPhone. After setting up the device, users will be provided with access to the Apple Intelligence features. To disable Apple Intelligence, users can move to the 'Apple Intelligence & Siri Settings' panel and turn off the Apple Intelligence toggle. This will disable Apple Intelligence features on the device.

Similar notes regarding updates for iPadOS and macOS are included.

'Changes to published Apple Intelligence have been made over several months'

Starting from iOS 18.3, users need to opt out manually to disable the use of Apple Intelligence.

Many users who are using supported AI devices likely already have Apple Intelligence enabled. However, those who don't need to learn about this yet can turn on the AI switch once the update arrives.

The uncertainty lies in what will happen to users who enable Apple's Intelligence and then later disable it in settings after it has been publicly released.

I hope that iOS 18.3 and its accompanying updates will re-enable some of these features, but I won't know for sure after the public release.

While iOS 18.3 has fewer features overall, the most notable changes are several updates to AI notification summaries that have been highly debated.

'Apple seems to be saying that it's time to enable this AI feature by default since its public release over several months ago.'
