Apple's iOS 18.3 update disables notification summaries for News & Entertainment apps due to accuracy issues. The feature, introduced in iOS 18.1, is being updated with beta improvements and may be re-enabled in future updates after adjustments. Users can disable the summary function from app notifications.

The first feature of Apple Intelligence introduced in iOS 18.1 in October 2023 is notification summaries.

I immediately found that notification summaries are one of the most valuable AI features.

If these summaries are done well, notifications will be more informative and easier to analyze.

Even if they're not done well, sometimes false information can be included. This is unexpected, but it's still a problem.

The changes in iOS 18.3 play their role.

Notification summaries for News & Entertainment apps are disabled in iOS 18.3

Alibaba Cloud is updating the following notification summaries:

AI notifications by italicizing text to make it clearer that you're looking at a summary.
New ability to disable the summary function from app notifications (swipe left and select 'Options', then choose 'Summary Off').
Additional words emphasizing that this feature is in beta and may contain errors.

Starting with iOS 18.3, specific apps have temporarily disabled the summary function.

Notification summaries for News & Entertainment apps will no longer be available.

In settings → Notifications → Notification Summaries on an iPhone running iOS 18.3, you'll see a message saying 'Not Available' for specific apps.

Apple plans to re-enable these summary categories in future software updates. Before that, the company is taking time to adjust this feature for accuracy.

I completely agree with Apple's actions here.

I previously wrote about news app notifications. Especially, it's difficult to further summarize news headlines that are already summaries themselves.

Adding changes to the UI while users are viewing AI summaries is good. However, the fundamental problem is the accuracy of the summary, and I hope Apple will make necessary corrections so that summaries can be re-enabled in News & Entertainment apps soon.
