Apple is striving for functional parity between iOS and macOS, but significant gaps remain in customization features. The latest macOS versions lack lock screen and app icon customizations found on newer iOS devices. Apple's pursuit of parity suggests a future where macOS will offer more control over these aspects, similar to its iOS counterparts.

These three iOS customization features do not exist on Mac.

In recent years, iOS and macOS have been pursuing a level of functional parity that has never been seen before. Today, the release of macOS often introduces features that were first introduced on iPhone or iPad, sometimes adding new aspects. However, despite this pursuit of functional parity, some gaps remain. These are mainly related to customization.

Customizing the Lock Screen

In iOS 16 (and subsequently iPadOS 17), Apple introduced lock screen customization for both iPhone and iPad, allowing users to add custom widgets or customize fonts on the lock screen. It's beautiful, but this level of customization has not reached macOS.

In macOS Sonoma, Apple re-designed the lock screen for macOS, but it is still not as extensive as on iPhone or iPad. There was no widget or font customization. It lacked the vibrancy of the previous lock screen redesign.

Customizing App Icons

In iOS and iPadOS 18, Apple introduced dark mode and color options for app icons, allowing users to theme their iPhone home screen. Some users may not love colored icons, but I accept it. And that's just an option.

However, this is not the whole story. Before iOS 18, app developers had the ability for users to change default app icons on iOS. This was a native feature and did not require shortcut hacks. macOS also has a general app icon customization feature, but it is less common compared to iOS and iPadOS.

The potential for app icon customization in macOS is lower than in iOS, but imagining such features being introduced to Macs is very exciting.

Customizing the Control Center

In the latest releases of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, Apple significantly updated the Control Center. This allows third-party apps to add toggles to the Control Center, and users can rearrange most of it in any order they prefer.

macOS also lacks this level of customization, similar to the rest of the list. Apple introduced Control Center in macOS Big Sur, but it has remained largely unchanged for over four years.

I don't expect to achieve such extensive reconfiguration on iOS, but some integration with third parties would be delicious.
