Apple's MacBook Pro will switch to OLED and remove the notch from 2026 onwards. MacBook Air, however, will adopt OLED around 2028, lacking important updates until then. This delay makes it one of the last Apple products to gain OLED technology. The current design of MacBook Air is expected to remain unchanged even when it adopts OLED.

Last week, we learned that MacBook Pro will switch to OLED and remove the notch from 2026 onwards. The same report also detailed the OLED timeline for Apple's other products, with MacBook Air falling short in two significant areas.

'MacBook Air is in a rare class due to its long wait for OLED'

OmniData announced the display timeline for Apple's Mac and iPad products. This timeline runs until 2030 and explains important update periods for various devices.

However, this news is not good for MacBook Air users. In two ways:

  1. OLED will be coming to this device for a while yet.
  2. And when it arrives, it will lack important updates.

"Regarding the first point, OmniData predicts that MacBook Air will adopt OLED around 2028, and its release on MacBook Pro will be almost two years later."

MacBook Air is slower in display technology compared to MacBook Pro. However, according to the timeline, iPad mini and iPad Air also plan to adopt OLED before this, making this delay particularly long.

OmniData expects iPad mini to adopt OLED in 2026, followed by iPad Air in 2027.

So not only will MacBook Air have to wait another 3-4 years for OLED—it will also be one of the last Apple products to gain this display technology.

Sadly, bad news continues.

OLED MacBook Air still has a crack

When MacBook Air finally gets OLED, it will retain its current notch design—according to OmniData.

This is particularly disappointing news. With the 2026 OLED upgrade for MacBook Pro, the notch will be removed, replaced by a smaller cutout.

However, MacBook Air, Apple's most popular flagship Mac, is considered to maintain its curved design for a long time.

The timeline and details may change at any time. Especially since these expected updates are still several years away. However, it seems unlikely that there will be a display upgrade for MacBook Air at present.
