The game can range from a word game that depends on the number of letters in the words to categories that require you to recognize additional letters at the end of the words. You cannot handle connections quickly and reliably like Wordle. This is because connections are not algorithmic. However, by keeping a few points in mind, you might find them somewhat helpful.- Find similar parts of speech. Is one word a verb and the other a noun? Or an adjective? Try to group them imaginatively based on these categories and see if other patterns become apparent.
- Are the words synonyms? Sometimes, the category is just a phraseological synonym or very close synonyms. However, don't rely on this too much. Sometimes, Connections intentionally inserts words that are sometimes synonyms to mislead you.
- Say the words out loud. Sometimes, saying these words can be helpful. In one puzzle, we saw words like go, rate, faster, clip, pace, speed, move, commute, and hurry, which are obviously related to the concept of movement. However, when you say these words, you realize that only four (go, move, hurry, faster) are words you would actually say to urge someone to hurry up.
- Expect the red herring. Connections usually contain words that could be misgrouped. For example, you might think they belong to a category related to beer, but Bud, Corona, and Light are not.
- Find distinctive words. If a word on the board has multiple meanings or can only be used in a specific context, try using that word as the basis for the category.
- Shuffle the board. Sometimes, rearranging the words can give you a new perspective.
If this couldn't be solved, don't worry—there will be another opportunity tomorrow! And these words might be related to topics you are interested in. This could help you take a step forward in the competition.
