What is a connection?

Connections is a game published by The New York Times. The goal is simple: arrange 16 words into groups of four. Each group of words connects through several common ideas or themes. The common element can be anything. So far, we've seen games that depend on the number of letters in words, categories where you need to find additional letters at the end of words, and various types of games. Sometimes it's economic references, sometimes fairy tales about magic. It's impossible to predict the relationship between words.

Methods to Predict Connection Groups

There is no algorithm like Wordle for Connections, so there is no quick and certain method. However, here are a few tips that may help.

「×Ad deletion」
  1. Find the same part of speech. Is one word a verb and another a noun? Or an adjective? Try grouping them based on these categories to see if any other patterns stand out.
  2. Are the words synonyms? Sometimes categories are just short phrases that are synonyms or very close to being synonyms. However, don't rely too much on this. Sometimes, Connections intentionally inserts some words that appear to be synonyms to mislead you.
  3. Translate the English text into Japanese. The original text and explanation are not needed.
  4. The red herring. Connections usually include reasonable groups of words that could be mistakenly grouped by mistake. For example, consider the words 'bad', 'cola', and 'light'. You might intuitively think these three words look together and belong to a category related to beer, but it's not so.
  5. Look for different words. Is a word on the board used in multiple meanings or only in a specific context? Try using that word as the basis of a category.
  6. Shuffle them. Sometimes changing the position of the words can give you a new perspective.
