What is a connection?

Connections is a game published by the New York Times. The goal is simple: arrange 16 words into groups of four. Each group of words has a common idea or theme. This common element can be anything. We've seen various types of games that work based on word count, to categories where you need to identify the last letter. Sometimes there are references to economics, and sometimes to fairy tales. The relationship between words cannot be predicted.

If you feel confident in understanding connections, select four words and press 'Submit'. You have a total of 4 attempts, so don't forget not to be too gambling-driven.

How to Guess Connection Groups?

There is no quick and sure method to approach connections like Wordle. This is because connections are not algorithmic. However, there are a few tips that might be helpful.

  1. Look for similar parts of speech. Is one word a verb and the other a noun? Or an adjective? Try grouping them imaginatively based on these categories to see if any other patterns emerge.
  2. Are the words synonyms? Sometimes, categories can become synonyms or almost synonyms. However, don't rely too much on this. Sometimes, Connections deliberately includes words that appear to be synonyms to mislead you.
  3. Saying a word out loud might help. Sometimes, simply saying a word reveals something. In one puzzle, words like 'go', 'rate', 'quickly', 'clip', 'pace', 'speed', 'move', 'commute', and 'early' were used. All of these relate to ideas of movement. However, when you say these words out loud, only the ones that are actually things someone would say to encourage movement (go, move, early, quickly) become clear.
  4. Red Herring Expectation. Connections usually include words that can be reasonably grouped together by mistake. For example, consider the words 'blood', 'cola', and 'light'. These three words might seem like they go together, but it's unlikely they would be categorized under a beverage category.
  5. Look for different words. If a word on the board doesn't have multiple meanings or is only used in a specific context, try using that word as the basis for a category.
  6. 'Shuffle the board. Sometimes changing the position of the words can give you a new perspective to look at them.'
