Microsoft 365 Personal/Family updates from Jan. 2025 will include Copilot with a $3 monthly fee. Customers must manually downgrade to Classic versions before then to avoid additional charges. Downgrading is essential for maintaining benefits without extra fees, though it's a temporary solution.

Starting from January 2025, updates for Microsoft 365 Personal and Family versions will automatically include Copilot, with a slight increase in the subscription fee. To prevent the fee from increasing, customers need to manually downgrade to Microsoft 365 Family Classic or Personal Classic before the update is applied. The classic version is a temporary solution, but it's the only option if you want to maintain Microsoft 365 benefits without additional charges. Starting from January 2025, customers of Microsoft 365 Family or Personal versions can automatically include Copilot in the latest version they install. However, this automation comes with an additional monthly fee of $3. If you don't intend to use Copilot and don't want to purchase any paid services that aren't needed, you must manually downgrade to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family Classic. The prices shown in the screenshots of this article are in GBP (£). I am using a UK-based subscription to demonstrate the downgrade process. You can execute the same procedure regardless of where you live.

Important Information Before Downgrading!

Before downgrading from Microsoft 365 Personal or Family to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family Classic, please understand the following important points: 1. Subscriptions with AI are named after non-AI predecessors by default. Even if the subscription name on your account doesn't change, be sure not to forget that a new higher fee may apply! 2. To avoid the increase in fees, you must manually switch to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family Classic. This is the same package you previously subscribed to but is no longer the default. Therefore, it has been renamed to 'Classic.' 3. Microsoft states that "Microsoft 365 Personal and Family Classic" is a limited-time option and is not always provided as a plan option. Hence, it cannot be considered a long-term solution. However, I was informed that my subscription would be billed at a lower rate every year for 12 months after the downgrade. Therefore, I propose keeping this classic subscription for a long time, although Microsoft wants you to choose a cheaper option. Regardless of your choice, make sure not to miss important update information related to this on the How-To Geek website's Microsoft section. 4. Always remember the update date! Existing subscribers to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family versions will not be billed for the upgraded Copilot package until the scheduled update. However, you may be charged for unused services if you don't notice that day has passed."

How to Downgrade from Microsoft 365 with Copilot to Classic

1. Go to the page where you can manage your subscription. 2. Look for the option to "Cancel Subscription" and click it. Don't worry—nothing will happen to your account at this point. 3. On the next page, choose the action needed. 4. Scroll down to the section titled "Choose A Plan That's Right For You." 5. Click on the "Switch Plan" under the Microsoft 365 Personal Classic card or Microsoft 365 Family Classic card. 6. Even though you're automatically subscribed to a new plan with a higher price, I want to return to my subscription of Microsoft 365 Personal Classic at the same price from last year. 7. A new window will appear, and you need to confirm that your subscription is not updated until its renewal date is planned. 8. If you're satisfied with the small print, choose a payment method and click "Pay." 9. Whether you're happy or not, you'll be left with the new Microsoft 365 Copilot plan. This will last until your update day. At that point, automatic downgrading will occur. During this time, if you want to upgrade to an AI-based plan, go back to the "Cancel Subscription" page and click 'Switch to Microsoft 365 Personal/Family Classic...,' then confirm your decision according to the instructions. The key is to manage your subscription and control how much screen space Copilot occupies. For example, even if you use the upgraded Microsoft 365 personal or family plan, you can remove Copilot from individual apps within the Microsoft 365 suite. Similarly, you can remove Copilot from the program ribbon if needed.
