Shotcut 25.01 added native Wayland support to the video editor on Linux via Flatpak.
Shotcut 25.01 was released today as the latest stable version of a free open-source cross-platform video editing software (for Linux, macOS, and Windows) written in Qt. This release came about two months after version 24.11 and introduced native Wayland support (without Xwayland) for the Flatpak package on Linux. Therefore, it is recommended to install Shotcut as a Flatpak application from Flathub if you are using a GNU/Linux distribution with a Wayland session. For Linux users, the new release of Shotcut fixes an issue with drag-and-drop from source players in Wayland and also corrects the color selection feature in Wayland. Additionally, the option "File > Open Other > JACK Audio" has been deprecated on Linux, and hard runtime dependency on libjack.so has been removed from Shotcut. Several exciting new features were added to Shotcut 25.01. These include playlist with Bin and media type & text search, the "Show" > "File Panel", options for "Show" in properties and jobs, gradient map video filter, type parameters for fade-in audio and fade-out audio filters. Additionally, this release includes an added toggle option for "Settings > Player > Pause After Decision", defaulting to on (previous behavior), HSL primary color and HSL range video filters (HSL = hue/saturation/brightness), improved support for MLT XML clips/subprojects, and the addition of hardware encoding features using h264_mf and hevc_mfcodecs with ARM CPU on Windows. Other improvements include enhancements to the playlist > slideshow generation options, which can be useful when creating montages from trimmed video clips. The export preset for H.264 High Profile has been changed to a higher quality than YouTube, and export > other support now includes pix_fmt=yuv420p10leoryuv444p10le,colorspace=2020,color_trc=arib-std-b67orsmpte2084. Of course, many bugs have been fixed, so for detailed information on the changes included in Shotcut 25.01, please refer to the release notes on the official website. From there, you can download a universal AppImage binary that runs without installing anything on your computer.
