Matter is a smart home standard that promotes interoperability among various competing home eco-systems like Apple, Google, and Amazon. A new report suggests that Matter is supporting smart speakers, but this has significant implications for Apple users.

New Smart Speaker Models Target Specific Products Only

Today, The Verge reported that Matter is developing "a new streaming speaker device type and related controls for smart home systems." This was confirmed by Chris LaPré, CTO of the Connectivity Standards Alliance that runs Matter.

There are important limitations before HomePods and Amazon Echo can work seamlessly:

"These popular smart speaker products will not be included in any 'streaming speaker model' to be released in the future. Instead, this feature targets speakers from Sonos, Bose, and other companies. In other words, it is not a speaker for playing music but rather a device for controlling other smart home devices."

Junior Nelson Patrick Touoh wrote for "The Verge":

Smart speakers (HomePods, Echo devices, Google's Nest speakers) are Matter controllers and not Matter device types. This is because they connect to Matter devices within their ecosystem and can control them but cannot be controlled by other Matter devices or ecosystems. Therefore, you cannot use an Amazon Echo Show to lower the volume of a Google Nest speaker or announce that a HomePod has completed the processing of a Matter-compatible washing machine.

However, not all is bad news.

This future integration may still be useful for adding support for various third-party speaker systems to Apple's Home app and Siri. For example, it could be convenient if you are deeply immersed in the Sonos world or combining different speakers. Matter compatibility would likely add a useful feature in such scenarios. At least, it should make it easier to switch between home eco-system options.

However, it is not what you expect from a complete dream, as Apple, Amazon, and Google's different smart speakers do not function well together as a universal solution for a smart home.
