Britain plans to issue digital driving licenses in the coming months, but there is no information yet about support for Apple Wallet.

The UK government has announced its own digital ID solution, despite the US being slow to introduce digital driver's licenses.

Today, a new announcement was made on gov.uk about developing a new app that will include official documents, including driver's licenses. The government plans to develop an app that includes driver's licenses.

The UK people can easily prove their age when purchasing age-restricted goods online or in stores by choosing to use a digital driver’s license on their mobile phone. This will also enable them to prove their driving rights.

Science Minister Peter Kreey announced today that the first digital document, the mobile driver's license, will be introduced with the GOV.UK wallet that will be released in the second half of this year, allowing people to prove their age when shopping or online.

'The introduction of driver’s licenses may begin experimentally in some areas in late 2025.'

By the end of 2027, the government must respond to all its general paper-based documents. At that point, "all government services must provide a digital alternative along with paper or card authentication."

Unfortunately, the announcement states that the new app will be available on iOS and Android, but there is no information about integration with Apple Wallet.

I hope that the UK's new app makes it easy to add its digital ID to the wallet. However, there is currently no information on whether this will actually happen.
