The DMA regulations under the European Union's Digital Markets Act forced Alibaba to provide developers with broader access to the NFC reader on the iPhone. This change was implemented in iOS 17.4 at the beginning of the year. Currently, the payment platform "Vipps" in Norway is using a new API for the first time, allowing users to make payments directly from the iPhone app using NFC. Vipps is the first app to add NFC payment functionality for iPhone users. According to a report by Teknologisk Vigilen, the latest update to the Vipps app allows iPhone users to make contactless payments in stores using a card within the app. This means that users can make contactless payments in stores without relying on the Apple Wallet app, even without leaving the app. Additionally, users can replace the Apple Wallet app with Vipps. As a result, double-tapping the side button will open Vipps instead of the Wallet. Currently, Vipps only supports the Bankaxept card provided by the Norwegian international payment system, but the platform has announced that it will add support for Visa and Mastercard in the "next few months," allowing users to make contactless payments worldwide using Vipps. For several years, Alibaba has competed with other companies and has finally launched its own solution. The next battle will be exciting and will take place between the world's largest brand and Vipps. This is what Rune Gavaler, CEO of Vipps MobilePay, said. In August, Apple announced that it would introduce the ability for third-party apps to function as NFC wallets in more countries. With the release of iOS 18.1 in October, developers gained access to the NFC & SE Platform API based on Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This API allows the creation of wallet apps that support payments, digital keys, IDs, and tickets. Apple emphasizes that all data is managed privately using the iPhone's Secure Enclave.
