VLC is one of the most popular multi-platform media players, and the company backing it up, VideoLAN, is currently undergoing a major update. In the future, users will not only be able to access AI-generated subtitles in multiple languages but will also be able to use them offline.

"AI-generated subtitles appear in VLC"

VideoLAN revealed this technology at CES 2025 and shared a video demonstrating its operation. Essentially, VLC uses AI to automatically create subtitles for videos. Additionally, the AI can translate subtitles into other languages in real-time while offline.

"At the same time, we are using the automatic translation feature to translate subtitles into your language," said Kempf. They plan to support over 100 languages. "What is important is that this operates locally on your device without using cloud services. It runs directly within the executable file."

VideoLAN demonstrated a series of videos shared on X, showing how an open-source AI model generates real-time subtitles in different languages. According to the company, this feature can be applied not only to pre-recorded videos but also to live broadcasts.

According to Verge, VideoLAN had already developed a plugin that generates subtitles based on OpenAI's Whisper, but in the new demo, a native feature integrated directly into the VLC app is shown. The specific time when this functionality will be publicly available is unclear.

In March 2024, VideoLAN is developing version 4.0 of VLC, which is a major update that restructures the "application's overall core." This ongoing update includes a refreshed interface and several other new features. VideoLAN also mentioned they are developing a version for Apple Vision Pro.
